The abbot was able to make a drink out of the berries and experienced the effects of caffeine himself. He noticed that he was able to stay sharp through long hours of evening. The abbot shared the findings to his fellow colleagues and the knowledge of the mysterious energizing berries began to spread. It then believed that word reached the Arabian Peninsula and coffee cultivation began, around the 14th Century.

History of tea

The History of tea is equally fuzzy and based on a legend – this time from China. In 2737 BC a Chinese Emperor Shen Nung, accidentally dropped a leaf into his bowl of hot water when he was out in the garden by a tea tree.  The emperor then sniffed the fragrant emanating from the brew, tasted it, and liked what he drank. Thus, a falling leaf discovered tea, accidentally. The first mention of tea was, however, not found until around 350 BC, when Erh Ya – an ancient Chinese dictionary was published.

Coffee definition

Coffee is defined on Wikipedia as a brewed drink, prepared from roasted coffee beans, the seeds of berries from certain coffee species. Coffee plants are at the moment grown in large scale farms in the Equatorial regions of the Americas, Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent and Africa. Altogether coffee is grown in large scale production in over 70 countries worldwide. There are two common types commonly grown: C. Arabica and C.robusta. The coffee is left to mature and the ripe, coffee berries are picked, processed and dried. The dried deeds coffee are roasted to varying temperature degrees and depending the desire flavour required. Once roasted, the “beans” are then ground and brewed with near-boiling water to produce coffee.

Coffee and tradition

Coffee is dark in colour, bitter in taste and slightly acidic in nature. It has a stimulating effect to humans, chiefly because of the caffeine it contains. It is one of the most popular drinks in the world, and it is usually drank anytime time, although most people prefer to drink coffee in the morning. Coffee is prepared and served in many ways such as espresso, French press, caffé latte. Coffee is usually served hot, although iced coffee is also an option. The short and long term consumption of coffee on the human body have been a subject of controversy. Although, clinical evidence indicate that moderate coffee consumption is has mild benefits to adults. There are no conclusive long-term implications of coffee on the human body. Some argue that caffeine has removal mechanism from the body while others do not think this an issue. Generally, there are people who believe coffee is bad and should be avoided and others don’t only see a problem with drinking coffee but they are huge coffee drinkers.

Tea

Tea according to the Wikipedia is defined as an aromatic beverage, commonly prepared by pouring hot or boiling water over cured leaves of the Camellia sinensis, an evergreen shrub native to East Asia. Tea is the most consumed drink in the world after water. The word “tea” is believed to have come from a Chinese for the tea shrub, pronounced tu`. Tea crops require at least 127 cm of rainfall a year to grow. And they require acidic soils. Tea crops yield positive results when cultivated at elevations of 1500m above sea level. At these heights, the plants grow more slowly, the acquire better flavour. If left undisturbed, a tea plant could grow up to 16 m (52 Ft). Cultivated plants are however, pruned to the waist for easy plucking. In addition, the short plants bear more shoots which produces new  and tender leaves and increase quality of the tea. Typically, only the 1-2 (2.5 cm to 5.1 cm) inches of the mature plant is picked. These leaves are called flushes. A plant will typically grow a new flush in 15 days. Leaves that take slower to develop a flush typically produce tea with better flavour. Leaf pests include mosquito bugs  and other variations of tea diseases.

Coffee online

The online market for coffee is on a rapid rise as the demand is both rising and taking advantage of the online platform. Traditionally, people would consume coffee in their homes or at coffee cafes. However, with the coming of the online market people are becoming more and more comfortable with purchasing coffee online. Online coffee shopping is slowly becoming the norm. Although, a large part of the population are still loyal to the traditionally coffee shop, they are open to new convenient ways of getting their coffee.
